The article linked to the picture below discusses how different crops have obtained new traits over time. These traits would be considered useful to us. Some of these traits include reduced bitterness and easily harvest-able.
Did evolution create these new traits? To arrive at the correct answer you must understand the semantics. Was new genetic information created to produce these new traits? NO! Was existing genetic information changed to produce these new traits? YES!
The article describes how one can create these new traits. It states, "researchers used chemical mutagenesis to induce random mutations in weeping rice grass, an Australian wild relative of domestic rice, to make it more likely to hold onto its seeds after ripening. And in wild field cress, a type of weedy grass, scientists silenced genes with RNA interference involved with fatty acid synthesis, resulting in improved seed oil quality". Here we see that no new genetic information was created. Only changed or, in the case of the silencing, destroyed!
Finally, the article states, "All of the plants we eat today are mutants, but the crops we have now were selected for over thousands of years, and their mutations arose by chance". Every generation is more mutant than the next because of copying errors that occur through reproduction. And while some mutations do create beneficial traits, such as those mentioned above, the genome as a whole is in a slow decline. The plants we see today are just degraded versions of those originally created perfect by God.
