The Amazing Changing Cichlids! Is This Evolution In Action?
June 30, 2017
The below linked article is research related to the great variety of Cichlids in Lake Victoria. It shows that around 500 different species of this fish live in the lake. If you look at the picture below, you will see many different color patterns, shapes and sizes. The research in this article states that they all originated from pairing of the Nile and Congo Cichlids.
The article states, "The hybridization of two divergent cichlid species enabled genetic variants to be recombined on a scale which would not otherwise be possible in a single population".
It is important to see that a great deal of variation can be achieved through genetic diversity. In other words, the original cichlids from the Nile and Congo had a diverse collection of genetic information that was able to create the variations you see today. There are two truths that must be known however:
1. No new genetic information was created, existing genetic information was only changed or expressed differently. The cichlids are still cichlids! No new genes!
2. The species of cichlids do not have as much genetic diversity as the original Nile and Congo species. Natural selection has removed genetic information from each species as the process of adaptation took place.
This is more scientific evidence that life does have the capacity to change, but that change is limited to existing genetic information. This is exactly how we see the great variety in life today even though the Ark carried just two of each Kind. The Kind on the Ark had great genetic diversity allowing for a lot of future variation.
