We often look at some of the ages quoted in the Bible and laugh. How could people like Adam and Noah live for 900 years! This is impossible and is proof that the Bible is only myth and fairy tales. But now science is beginning to reveal the secrets behind the observations in the Bible. It has been proven that genetics is the key driver to how long we live. A big part of this genetics is the telomere. The telomeres are caps at the end of your chromosomes. Once these caps wear out, your cells can no longer split and that leads to death. If these telomeres didn't wear out as quickly, then your life span could likely be extended quite a bit.
If you plot out the ages documented in the Bible, you will notice a perfect decay curve when it comes to the ages of man (see the graph on the Creationist's View page of this website). The rapid decay occurs right after what would be the end of The Flood. Because the population would have started over with just 8 people, genetic diversity would have been more limited at this point. Noah's family would have to inbreed in order to begin growing the human population again. As this article shows with bird populations, this inbreeding likely significantly limited the durability of the telomeres of the human population. While this certainly can't be proven scientifically, what we can know is that telomeres greatly impact lifespan and inbreeding damages the telomeres. This lines up quite well with what is documented in the Bible. The other explanation is that the various authors of the Old Testament conspired over many centuries to record ages that created a decay curve - this seems unlikely. It is more likely they simply recorded the true ages of these people.
This is yet another evidence to have faith in the Bible. While something may seem unbelievable to us now, that doesn't mean it isn't true as the Bible has continually been proven to be completely accurate in all that is recorded in it.
