Nobody wants Bed Bugs! Today's bed bugs that target humans struck me as a terrific example of the power of natural selection. Which is not to help create new genetic information and build organisms, but to select traits within existing genetic information. The article below is showing how bed bugs are becoming more resistant to pesticides. The pesticide is acting as a strong natural selector and wipes out all of those beg bugs who do not have a thick skin. This, in effect, draws out the thick skin trait in the genetic code and is getting rid of the genetic information for thin skin. As most if not all agree, natural selection is a mechanism to get rid of genetic information. To use a sports analogy - shorter players will typically not be selected to play - the taller ones will be selected because they perform better. The exact same is true here with bed bugs.
I did some research and bed bugs are thought to have originated from caves where they fed on the blood of bats. You can read the second article below for more information, but the point that stood out to me was: "Even today it (the bat bed bug) shows much more genetic diversity than the human form.". This shows the human bed bug has had the forces of natural selection put on it more than that of the bat bed bug so it has less genetic information than the bat bed bug. What would be a very interesting experiment would be to reintroduce the human bed bug into the bat bed bug environment. My bet is they wouldn't perform very well in the bat environment and would likely die off. This is the exact same scenario we see in hospitals regarding "super germs". These super germs have the mutations needed to survive the drugs used in the hospital, but when reintroduced into a natural environment, they die off very quickly because their genomes have become degraded and the organism is less robust.
In summary - what great evidence of the true working of natural selection and mutations. Not the false faith of building genetic information, but that of bringing out certain traits in an environment and the loss of genetic information over time.
