The article and video linked through the two pictures below is on a great piece of research comparing the genomes of the giraffe and the okapi. These two animals are in the same family and appear to have the same or close to the same number of genes - 17,000. From the picture below you can see how different they look. Evolution would say both of these animals share a relative in the past from which it came and Creationism would say exactly the same thing! Evolution and Creationism would both say that mutations and gene expression from an original ancestor are what accounts for the differences in the giraffe and okapi - they are speciated versions of the original kind. At this point the debate is in agreement - both positions are effectively saying the same thing - that mutations and gene expression can significantly effect the appearance of an organism.
The difference comes when we ask where did the genetic information that is being changed come from in the first place? Evolution would say it was slowly created by random mutations - a bottom up approach. Creationism would say the genetic information was created whole from the beginning - a top down approach. While I agree that mutations can cause certain traits to be expressed and change the appearance of organisms - as seen in this research, mutations can't create complex information and instructions from scratch to build an organism. For example, mutations couldn't create the cardiovascular system, bone structure, skin/fur, nervous system, organs, etc..
So what can break the stalemate? To me, it comes back to the complexity of the cell, vast amounts of information, molecular machines, and DNA language. Random mutations simply can't account for this. We have never observed the creation of new information, but we observe mutations changing and degrading information all the time. The only logical conclusion is that the genetic information was created whole from the beginning and through changes in the information and gene expression we have original kinds that have adapted and speciated over time to be different, but originating from the original kind.
