As I have shown many times, mutations are degrading the genome. Many times the first question that pops into people's minds is "Then why are people living longer today?". And this is a very good question. People are living longer today than they did 100 or 200 years ago. But this isn't because your genome is better today than it was then. It is because medicine, particularly over the past 20 years has greatly improved. From infant mortality, prescription drugs, new treatments, advanced medical equipment, etc.. we have had medical advances that add years if not decades onto our lives. If we took all of these advancements away, I bet the average lifespan would drop by 10 or more years. The below article details this by showing that even though we are living longer, it is resulting in many people living with disabilities and lower qualify of life. We are in effect using our technology to put the population of a kind of pre-life support. I'm often in amazement by the number of people on prescription drugs today - even younger people - to help them with various conditions they have. Our medicine can hide the decline in the genome for now, but over time it will become more and more obvious what is happening.
